When fourth-year Education student Annie Hylton was raped in December of 2001, she chose to confront her attacker, a fellow student, through the University's sexual assault adjudication process. Specifically, she chose to initiate Sexual Assault Board proceedings against the man who she says raped her in his fraternity house.
Before she began proceedings, Hylton said she was informed that she would need to keep all procedures and outcomes of the SAB confidential, and could be subject to disciplinary action if she did not comply.
Following a recent decision by the federal Department of Education, which held a similar policy at Georgetown University violated federal law, Hylton has filed a complaint against the University alleging that its policies are in violation of the Jeanne Clery Act. The law mandates that students who initiate sexual assault adjudication proceedings be "informed of the outcome of any institutional disciplinary proceeding brought alleging a sex offense
