Registrar reallocates course sign-up times

According to Associate University Registrar Jonathan Helm, Advanced Placement credit, International Baccalaureate credit and summer course credits not accrued at the University are no longer factored into the determination of registration times. The only non-University credits considered in allotment of assignment times are credits of students who have just transferred to the University. Newly accepted students and college students who have failed to certify their enrollment will receive the latest times.

"We are still giving preference to Echols Scholars and athletes, then each ... year [at the University] from fourth-year to first," Helm explained. "It's just that within each year, the credits that are being utilized to make that determination are being counted differently."

In addition, only students studying abroad through a University program will have those credits counted toward registration times. Credits earned in summer courses at other universities or institutions will not be factored in either, according to Helm.

"Basically, if the credit is considered U.Va. credit, it counts. If it's considered transfer credit, it likely will not," Helm said.

Students have expressed mixed reactions to the change.

"It seems like some students get the short end of the deal," first-year College student Aubyn Carraway said.

Carraway suggested that the University Registrar should instead implement a system where "students who got late times last semester ... get higher priority this semester."

Other students expressed satisfaction with the change.

"The previous system didn't really make sense," second-year College student Katrin Schulz said. "People coming in from high school with a ton of credits got an unfair advantage over those whose high schools didn't offer AP or IB."

This process will be used for "the foreseeable future," Helm said. "It seems a little more fair, and we haven't received many student complaints."

Helm added that should students have any more questions, there is information on the University Registrar Web site about the criteria and order of assignments.
