Former journalist Leslie Cockburn was selected to be the Democratic candidate for Virginia’s Fifth District at a party convention in Farmville Saturday. Cockburn received 146 of the 236 votes cast, followed by 62 for Andrew Sneathern and 28 for Roger Dean Huffstetler.
Cockburn will run against Republican incumbent Rep. Tom Garrett — who was first elected in 2016 — in the November congressional election to represent the Fifth District. Garrett’s chances for victory against the Democratic nominee were recently downgraded from “Likely Republican” to “Lean Republican” by nonpartisan electoral forecasting analysis firm The Cook Political Report.
Following the City of Charlottesville caucus April 24, Cockburn secured 134 of the 250 total delegate votes for the district.
The election between Garrett and Cockburn will be held Nov. 6.
