Moore signs $33 million extension with Lions

Four-time Pro Bowl receiver and ex-Cav Herman Moore reportedly signed a contract extension with the Detroit Lions that takes his deal through the 2005 season.

The agreement was worth a reported $33 million for seven years and includes a signing bonus worth $8.5 million. The official terms of the deal were not released.

Moore became the fastest receiver ever to reach the 600-career receptions mark last season. He caught his 600th pass in only the 118th game of his career. That pace was a full five games faster than San Francisco wideout Jerry Rice, who caught No. 600 in his 123rd career game.

Rice and Moore have another benchmark in common, though. The duo are the only two players in NFL history to make 100 or more receptions for three consecutive seasons. Moore caught 123 in 1995, 106 in 1996 and 104 in 1997.

Two ex-Cavs may play in the IBL: The newly-formed International Basketball League conducted its draft this week, with two former Virginia stars making the list. Richmond and Baltimore drafted Junior Burrough and Norm Nolan respectively.

Nolan, a product of Baltimore's Dunbar High School, went in the ninth round. Burrough was chosen by Richmond in the ninth round as well. He still will try to make an NBA roster this season, but if that endeavor fails, Burrough may decide to stay in Virginia and play.

FSU picked No. 1 ... again: The Florida State football team was tabbed as the preseason favorite to win the ACC at the annual ACC media day. It marks the eighth straight season that the Seminoles were picked to win the Conference.

The 'Noles finished last season as runner-up to Tennessee in the national title game. Since making a move to the ACC, FSU has compiled a 54-2 record and won five outright Conference Championships.

Georgia Tech was picked to finish second, while Virginia received the third-place nod.

No expansion ... for now: ACC Commissioner John Swofford announced at the annual ACC media day that the Conference would not be expanding in the immediate future. However, he indicated that expansion was inevitable in the future.

Walking on hot Coles: Florida State wide receiver Laveraneus Coles must prove that he payed for a plane ticket to Houston last week. It has been speculated that he attended a party paid for by a sports agent.

The agent in question is Carl Poston, who acknowledged that he hosted a party. However, the gathering was only for professional clients.

FSU officials are asking that Coles provide evidence that he paid for his trip. They may also ask him to account for his itinerary in Houston. Coles reportedly went to visit his girlfriend on the trip.

Warrick among Heisman hopefuls: Seminole senior receiver Peter Warrick, who opted to stay for his final season, is among the early favorites for the Heisman trophy.

Other front runners in the preseason include Ron Dayne of Wisconsin, Drew Brees of Purdue and Ricky Williams of Texas Tech.

A Penny for your Zen thoughts: It has been reported that the L.A. Lakers may trade for Orlando guard Penny Hardaway. It would most likely occur in a sign-and-trade format for the two squads.

The move would reunite former Magic teammates Hardaway and Shaquille O'Neal. L.A. executive Jerry West met with Hardaway last week, but the meeting's topics were not disclosed.
