Virginia swimmer Ed Moses parted his own waters at the Pan American Games, claiming the gold medal in the 100-meter breaststroke Monday.
Moses came home first with a time of 1:00.99. The finishing mark eclipsed his record-setting swim from earlier in the day. He set the Pan American Games record with a time of 1:01.06 in his preliminary heat.
The time nearly broke the American record as well. Jeremy Linn set the existing mark of 1:00.77 at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
Moses, a second year at Virginia, returns to the Cavs as the ACC Rookie of the Year. Moses also earned All-America honors by finishing second in both the 100-yard and 200-yard breastroke at NCAAs.
Another Pan Am waterboy: Former Cavalier swimmer Shamek Pietucha finished second in the 100-meter butterfly at the Pan American Games. The silver medal winner touched home with a time of :53.40.
Pietucha is scheduled to compete in the 200-meter butterfly Friday.
Vizzuso earns start, USA wins: Cav All American field hockey player Michelle Vizzuso started for the USA Field Hockey Team in its last game, a 2-0 shutout victory against Chile.
The Americans advanced to the gold medal game with the win. They will face Argentina with the victor gaining an automatic berth in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. It is the second straight gold medal game in the Pan American Games for the USA.
Frequent flyer miles: The men's basketball teams at Florida State and N.C. State both are traveling overseas to play in exhibition games.
The Wolfpack is currently in Italy for a 13-day tour. N.C. State's first game of the trip is slated for tomorrow against Snaidero Udine.
The Seminoles have not left for their scheduled tour yet; they will leave August 11 for Austrailia. FSU will play seven games while overseas and will return home to Talahassee August 27.
Parker it somewhere else: North Carolina men's basketball recruit Jason Parker failed to academically qualify for the upcoming season.
Parker will attend Fork Union Military Academy for one year. He then plans to enroll at Chapel Hill the following year. Parker will retain all four years of eligibility.
Parker's failure to qualify leaves the Heels with only two incoming recruits for the '99 season. Joe Forte from Hyattsville, Md., and Jon Holmes from Bloomington, Ind. signed to play for UNC.
Stackhouse finishes degree: Ex-Carolina basketball star Jerry Stackhouse, who left school after his sophomore season in '95 for the NBA, finished his degree at UNC. Stackhouse completed the academic load by taking eight credits this summer.
Two more Cav football signees: Reports indicate that two more rising high school seniors have committed to play football at Virginia. Eddie Robertson of California and Billy Sweitzer of Alexandria have reportedly committed verbally to the Cavs.
Hoos your daddy, Hudak? Cavalier Daily Editor-in-Chief Mike Greenwald dominated UJC Chairman Brian Hudak in a recent game of miniature golf at Planet Fun's course.
Greenwald's victory could have been even sweeter if not for a collapse down the stretch. Entering the 15th hole, the fourth year was at even par, but he quadruple-bogeyed the 15th. Greenwald went on to finish a miserable nine-over par, while Hudak finished at a very sad +21.
Sosa is just too sweet: Chicago Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa nailed his 42nd homerun yesterday afternoon. Sosa went yard in the sixth inning to left field.
The homer gives Sosa the major league lead. It also places him ahead of his 66-homerun pace from a year ago. Sosa did not hit No. 42 until game 110 last season. Yesterday's game was the Cubbies' 105th.
