Women's rowing pulled its way to a top five finish in the four events in which they competed at the Charles Regatta in Boston, a rowing competition that includes collegiate, national teams and others.
Among collegiate teams, the Cavs finished second behind Southern Cal and fifth overall in the Championship Eight. The top three overall winners were Rowing Canada, United States Rowing and the Danish National Team.
Virginia was the top collegiate boat in the Lightweight Four with a time of 19:02, and second only to The Argonaut Rowing Club of Ontario which posted a time of 18:53. The race marked the last time the Lightweight boat will compete for Virginia.
All even in the ACC
The feeling from ACC Operation Basketball is that no one team will dominate the Conference this season.
Perennial powers North Carolina and Duke, while still ranked as the top two, will be threatened by the likes of Wake Forest, Maryland and N.C. State.
"I think we're one of five or six teams that could win the league," said North Carolina Coach Bill Guthridge at ACC Operation Basketball.
Duke is suffering from the losses of Elton Brand, William Avery and Corey Maggette early to the NBA. Seven freshmen have been recruited to help fill the roster and give Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski a new core from which to build.
"Last year's team, I was trying to prepare for March. This year's team I approach differently," Krzyzewski said. "We have a tough schedule so we need to have some success."
Stewart dies in plane crash
Payne Stewart and four others died yesterday when his Learjet crashed in a grassy field in South Dakota. The twin-engine plane had been flying erratically before the crash, and it is thought that pressurization in the cabin may have failed.
Stewart won the 1999 U.S. Open to make it his second U.S. Open victory since his first win in 1991. He was the only player to finish under par in the 1999 U.S. Open.
Stewart was expected in Houston today to prepare for the Tour Championship, the PGA Tour's final tournament of the year.

Barkley announces retirement
Charles Barkley, 36, announced his retirement Sunday at halftime during the Houston Rockets exhibition victory over the Detroit Pistons.
In addition to stating his retirement, Barkley announced three gifts of $1 million apiece that he plans to give to Leeds High School, Auburn University and a Birmingham inner-city youth program called Cornerstones Schools.
"I don't think God gave me this gift so I could play basketball and have $50 million in the bank and live happily ever after," Barkley told ESPN.
