Wilson arrested for rape, assault

Former Virginia point guard and St. Mary's College men's basketball coach Othell Wilson was arrested Monday after being accused of abducting and raping a female student at his apartment in St. Mary's City, Md.

According to police reports, Wilson, 38, met the woman at her home in Fairfax, Va., Friday and drove her to his residence where he is accused of holding her against her will with a knife before threatening to kill her if she told anybody.

The 22 year-old victim contacted police and was treated at a hospital in Fairfax County.

Wilson is charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, first-degree rape, first-degree sex offense and assault. He is being held without bond at St. Mary's County Detention Center, and the school has placed him on administrative leave.

Wilson played point guard for the Cavaliers from 1981-1984 and was a member of the '81 and '84 NCAA Final Four squads. He is Virginia's career leader in steals with 222.

He went on to play for the Sacramento Kings and the Golden State Warriors. Wilson joined the St. Mary's coaching staff in 1998.

Hucles, Weigand score honors

After torching Stanford and Hartford for game-winning goals last weekend in the Coca-Cola Classic, Cavalier women's soccer captains Angela Hucles and Carryn Weigand were named to the Soccer America Team of the Week.

Hucles finished off a three-goal comeback against the Cardinal Saturday with a score in the 88th minute. She also assisted on a Jill Maxwell goal earlier in the match.

Weigand paced a 2-1 victory over then-No. 7 Hartford with a 55th minute header that put the Cavs up for good.

Hucles also was named ACC Player of the Week for her play in the Coke Classic.

U-Wire jumps on Jones' bandwagon

The accolades are still coming in for Thomas Jones after his 210-yard, two touchdown performance last week at Brigham Young.

Campus sports writers from around the nation elected Jones as U-WIRE National Player of the Week. The Cavalier back also was named ACC Player of the Week earlier after running all over the Cougars.

Former Cav Named to Football Hall of Fame

The National Football Foundation selected former Cavalier defensive guard Joe Palumbo to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Palumbo played for Virginia from 1949 to 1951 and was a first-team All-American in 1951.

He will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame Dec. 7 at the National Football Foundation's 42nd Annual Awards Dinner in New York City.

An on-field ceremony is planned for Palumbo tomorrow at the Virginia-Virginia Tech game.

McPhee's punches cost Caps' GM

The NHL fined Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee $20,000 and suspended him for a month for his part in a fight after last Saturday's exhibition game between Washington and Chicago.

McPhee reportedly entered the Blackhawks road locker room and punched coach Lorne Molleken after a contest in which McPhee believed Chicago players were overly physical.
