The Virginia men's soccer team knew that in order to secure a spot in the 32-team NCAA Tournament they would have to conclude the season with a strong showing in the ACC tourney.
The Cavaliers (12-8-1) proved ready for the task, heading to Winston-Salem, N.C., and advancing to the finals of the Conference Tournament before falling to Duke in triple overtime Sunday.
The seventh-seeded Cavs downed No. 2 Maryland in the first round, 2-0, avenging an earlier loss this season. Virginia then defeated Wake Forest in the semifinals.
With this strong outing, Virginia qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the 54th time. The Cavs will face Princeton in the first round Sunday at Klöckner Stadium. This will be the seventh meeting between Virginia and Princeton, a series which the Cavs lead 5-1-0.
Virginia's Etu wins Keydet Invitational
The Virginia wrestling squad opened its 1999 season by competing in the Virginia Military Institution's Keydet Invitational.
Cav Steve Mazzola went 2-1 in the 174-pound division, losing only 4-2 in the championship match.
The only Cavalier to come away with a championship was first-year heavyweight Josh Etu, at 285 pounds, who pinned both his foes in the tournament. One of those victories only took 14 seconds.
Next in line for the Cavaliers is the 1999 Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, Pa., Sunday.
Cavs sign four West Coast softballers
Softball Coach Cheryl Sprangel announced that four players have signed national letters of intent to attend the University. The four recruits, pitcher Joanna Barstad, pitcher Jessica Edwards, shortstop Hannah Owings and infielder Tracy Sherman, all originate from the West Coast.
"Overall this is definitely one of our strongest recruiting classes in terms of quality and quantity," Sprangel said. "All of the players will help bring the Virginia softball program to the next level"
