Odds and Ends

Let's get together

Students will have an opportunity to support diversity and show just how well they can get their groove on at the Celestial Ball tomorrow.

Jointly sponsored by BC Entertainment, Shaetahn Productions and Club Krew Productions, the semi-formal affair will be held from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Doubletree Hotel.

The three groups responsible for putting the Celestial Ball together are no strangers to creating dance parties -- BC Entertainment often puts on parties at the Student Activities Building, Shaetahn Productions is associated with Club Vital at Espresso Corner and Club Krew has been responsible for Divine at Trax.

Tomorrow will be special though, because all three audiences are brought together to experience an eclectic range of music styles.

"There's going to be Latin, Persian, Middle-Eastern, hip hop, house and techno music played throughout the night," said Sahair Monsared, fourth-year College student and event volunteer.

The event's organizers hope to attract a wide variety of party revelers. Tickets to the Celestial Ball are being sold on the Lawn, in the Newcomb Hall Box Office and at Plan 9 for $10, and they also will be sold at the door.

"Tickets have been selling really well, and a diverse group of volunteers have been helping out," Monsared said. "I think this is going to be a big mixing bowl with an incredible atmosphere."

Frisbee fore-ay

You don't have to be good with a set of clubs to tee off in the University Judiciary Committee's first annual Frisbee Golf tournament today.

The frisbees are set to fly at various locations around Grounds from 1 to 4 p.m., although a single game should last only an hour, said Gregg Helvey, a UJC educator and third-year College student.

Helvey set up the event to educate students about the UJC. A question about the UJC will be placed at each "hole," and students can write their answer on their scorecard; at the end of their game, one stroke will be taken off for each correct answer.

Students were supposed to register on the Lawn yesterday, but the table was rained out.

"We were expecting a lot [of participants], but we're having some problems with registration," Helvey said.

As a result, he said students can register today at the Thomas Jefferson statue in front of the Rotunda during the event. There is a $2 registration fee, but even frisbee flops can succeed: the UJC is awarding door prizes as well. The tournament is offering such prizes as cash and dinners for two.
