Shuffling for the Mouse
While spades and hearts never have enjoyed the high tension and excitement of poker, and euchre has languished in card game anonymity, University students will get a chance to play these games for some serious stakes tomorrow.
The Wild Card Collegiate Tournament, sponsored by the United States Playing Card Company, will be held tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. in the Newcomb Hall South Meeting Room. Winners in each of the three game competitions will win an all-expenses paid trip to Disney World from March 12-16.
In addition to visiting Mickey and riding Space Mountain, winners will spend their time in Florida competing in the Bicycle WILD National Championship. Winners of this competition could come away not only with the national title, but also with up to $25,000 awarded to their university.
"We need at least eight people to sign up in each category, and partners are required for spades and euchre," said Dan Lapidus, third-year College student and Gameroom supervisor.
"So far we have enough for the hearts and spades tournament, but no one has signed up to play euchre," Lapidus said. "If we get the minimum for euchre then there's a two in eight chance that you'll win."
Aspiring card sharks should sign up by 11:45 p.m. tonight in the Newcomb Hall Gameroom for their chance to come out on top in tomorrow's tournament.
Loveable, clonable Mr. Jefferson
We at the University have long taken personal pride in the achievements of Thomas Jefferson. Whenever his accomplishments are heralded, we feel a sense of personal satisfaction. When he was placed in the top 20 of A&E Biography's list of the 100 most important people of the last 1,000 years, no one on Grounds was surprised.
Now, Jefferson has found himself on yet another venerable list, MSNBC columnist Jill Nelson's list of "Men We Would Clone."
According to her article posted on MSNBC.com, Nelson maintains that the men who appear on her list are worth duplicating because they "are intelligent, creative, and accomplished ... My cloning candidates should have a sense of humor, a sense of community beyond the community of the self -- no egomaniacs allowed! -- and have changed society for the better or have the potential to do so."
Earning a spot on Nelson's list has put Jefferson in the company of such men as Bill Gates, Nelson Mandela, Leonardo Da Vinci, Richard Pryor, Tommy Lee Jones and James Brown. Which, when you think about it isn't so surprising -- equating the father of the University with the Godfather of Soul.
