The Virginia baseball team, which finished seventh in the ACC last season, has been picked to take sixth place this year, according to the Preseason Baseball Coaches Poll. The Cavaliers received 31 voting points in the poll, tying them with N.C. State. The Cavs return 17 lettermen and seven starters from last year's team, which finished 21-35 overall and 8-15 in the ACC.
Seton Hall postpones events
Seton Hall's Athletic Department has canceled all competitions for the remainder of the week in response to a dormitory fire Wednesday that killed three students and injured at least 54, according to the Associated Press. The men's and women's basketball games against Syracuse already have been canceled, as well as the men's and women's swimming events.
Moss fined for squirting official
Pro Bowl receiver Randy Moss of the Minnesota Vikings has been fined $40,000 for squirting liquid at an official, according to the AP.
The incident occurred late in the Vikings' game against St. Louis, when Moss, who was standing near the sideline, squirted field judge Jim Saracino after an incomplete pass that Moss said should have been called pass interference.
Deion returns to the diamond
Deion Sanders, cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys, has signed a non-guaranteed minor league deal with the Cincinati Reds, ESPN.com reported yesterday.
"We don't know where his baseball skills are, but in spring training we want to give him the opportunity to compete for a roster spot," General Manager Jim Bowden said.
Turner speaks out on Rocker
Atlanta Braves owner Ted Turner says he is willing to give controversial closer John Rocker the benefit of the doubt.
"He's just a kid," Turner told the AP, in an interview on CNN's "Moneyline." "I think he was off his rocker when he said those things."
