Jordan joins Wizards' staff

The Washington Wizards announced yesterday that Michael Jordan will become the team's president of basketball operations with an eventual option to buy a percentage of the team.

Jordan, a six-time NBA champion as a player for the Chicago Bulls, will be running he Wizards before the NBA's Feb. 24 trading deadline.

According to ESPN, Jordan will have an option to buy a percentage of the team either upon the death of majority owner Abe Pollin or if Pollin sells his interest in the team.

As head of basketball operations, Jordan will oversee the trading, signing and drafting of players and the hiring and firing of front-office personnel.

Solomon named ACC Player of the Week

For the second time this season, Clemson sophomore guard Will Solomon has been selected as the ACC Player of the Week. He led the Tigers with 56 points in two Conference games last week, including a 43-point performance against Virginia Saturday -- the most by a Clemson player in 30 years. The ACC Rookie of the Week honors were given to Duke point guard Jason Williams, after he helped lead the Blue Devils to a pair of ACC wins last week. He averaged 15 points, five assists and four steals in the two contests.

Volnaya named ACC Player of the Week

Virginia third-year forward Svetlana Volnaya was named the ACC Player of the Week after her performance against Maryland Saturday. She scored 28 points and shot .648 from the floor in the 76-68 win over the Terps. Seventeen of her 28 points were scored in the second half, which helped the Cavs erase a four-point halftime deficit.

Student tickets still available

According to the Virginia Athletic Department, tickets still are available for students for the ACC Men's Basketball Tournament and Monday's men's basketball game against Virginia Tech.

All full-fee paying Virginia students interested in tickets for the 2000 ACC Tournament, held in Charlotte, N.C., must apply at the ticket office in University Hall by Wednesday. Each application must include a payment of $220.

Tickets for the Virginia-Virginia Tech game at the Richmond Coliseum are $10 each and may be purchased at the athletic ticket office until tomorrow.
