Lacrosse honors abound for Virginia

Virginia lacrosse fourth-years Amy Fromal, Ashley Widger and Stephy Samaras earned preseason LaxPower All-American honors Monday, seven months after guiding the Cavaliers to the NCAA finals against Maryland.

Fromal and Widger, both Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association first-team All-Americans last season, made the preseason first team, while Samaras garnered an honorable mention.

Fromal, who plays primarily defensive wing, scored the game-winning goal against Duke in the NCAA semifinals. Widger, a defender who also made last year's USL All-American first team, was Virginia's 1999 MVP. Samaras led the Cavs in caused turnovers and anchored the defense alongside Widger.

Men's lacrosse dishes out awards

The Cavalier men's lacrosse team held its annual banquet this weekend, honoring the first Virginia squad in 27 years to bring home the National Championship.

Former All-American attacker Tucker Radebaugh, entering his first year as a Cav assistant coach, was named team MVP and earned the Henry Gaver Award for leadership, spirit and service.

Midfielder Jay Jalbert grabbed offensive MVP honors and defenseman Ryan Curtis and long-stick midfielder Peter Ragosa shared the defensive MVP award. Midfielder Henry Oakey received the Tom Rixey Award for spirit and inspiration after overcoming a severe knee injury in 1997.

Snow ices college schedules

Heavy snow in the Carolinas and Virginia postponed seven college basketball games scheduled for last night. Both the Maryland at North Carolina and N.C. State at Clemson men's basketball games have been rescheduled for tonight.

Chapel Hill has seen nearly 20 inches of snow in the past week, while travel between North Carolina and South Carolina has been a struggle at best.

Cav alumnus signs to coach Jets

Al Groh, a 1967 graduate and former Virginia letter winner and assistant coach, was named head coach of the New York Jets Monday.

Groh got the job when Bill Belichick stepped down 24 hours after automatically ascending to the head coaching position when Bill Parcells resigned. Groh has served as assistant coach with the Patriots and Giants in addition to the Jets.

Groh was a Cavalier assistant from 1970-72 and began his coaching career at Albemarle High School. His oldest son, Mike, started at quarterback for the Cavs from 1994 to 1995.
