Chewning, Thomas to serve as Residence Life Co-Chairs

After a tough application process and a series of interviews, third-year College students Sarah Chewning and Katherine Thomas were selected as Residence Life Co-Chairs for 2000-2001.

June 1, Chewning and Thomas will take over supervision of the Resident Staff Program, succeeding fourth-year students Jen Kyle and Esther Adams.

"They have been wonderful," Adams said of Chewning and Thomas. "They have shown great maturity and desire to serve the Resident Staff Program."

Both Chewning and Thomas currently serve as Senior Residents in first-year residences at Watson and Humphrey Houses, respectively.

The co-chairs work with the Residence Life Deans, the Area Coordinators and the Program Coordinators in developing the Resident Staff Program.

Thomas said her year as co-chair will be an "amazing opportunity to work with some incredible people."

She said although she will miss interacting directly with underclassmen, she is looking forward to working with University staff and administrators.

"We'll be working right alongside the deans and area coordinators and our opinion will be taken just as seriously as if we were one of those professionals," she added.

Chewning also said she was pleased about being co-chair and that she loved the Resident Staff program.

First-year College student Rachel Parrish, one of Chewning's residents, said she feels Chewning is highly qualified for her new position.

"Sarah's awesome. She's the best RA ever," Parrish said. "She goes out of her way to make us feel comfortable."

Next year, Thomas will live in an apartment in the McCormick Road dormitories area and Chewning will live in the Alderman Road dormitories area. They will hold weekly meetings with the senior residents from their areas.

First-year College student Sara Gillies is one of Thomas's residents.

"She has helped make my first year really good," Gillies said. "I feel I can talk to her about anything."

"She sticks to what she says she's going to do," she said.

Thomas said after filling out an application, she was interviewed by a 20-person committee composed of administrators, staff members and a few students. Then she had a peer interview with the executive committee of the Resident Staff.

Chewning said one of the main projects she and Thomas will work on is planning the orientation week for resident staff the week before school starts this summer and implementing training programs for staff members.
