Commerce School receives $7.3 million gift

The Commerce School has received the largest gift in the school's history - a $7.3 million donation.

The donation will finance a system of real-time software and equipment that will enable Commerce School students and faculty to observe and analyze changes in economic markets instantaneously.

Bridge Information Systems, based in New York, is the largest provider of financial information services in North America, and is donating the technology to the Commerce School to finance the Bridge Center for Financial Markets.

This gift represents the largest contribution ever given to the Commerce School and will be distributed over five years, with a value of at least $1.5 million annually.

The donation provides "financial information and news services, live coverage of world markets and the tools to perform analysis and in-depth study of financial markets and how they work," said Bridge Executive Vice President Angus Robertson.

Robertson said the gift "gives students access to the same tools and information that financial market professionals have in their work."

Diana Walker, Commerce School associate dean for external affairs, said the new center will help revolutionize Commerce School teaching.

"The Bridge Center promises to change the teaching of business and finance at McIntire," Walker said. "This is a great development for the University."

Robertson said the enhanced partnership will aid potential recruiting and job placement of McIntire graduates because of the students' increased familiarity with Bridge's systems.

The Center will be equipped with 62 fiancial workstations that will assist students and faculty in developing portfolios, building financial models, testing ideas and training systems, and watching current markets and developing economic events.

Also included in the Center will be a simulated trading room, featuring BridgeStation and a capital markets room featuring workstations from Telerate Inc., a Bridge subsidiary.

BridgeStation is Bridge's most inclusive combination of market data, analytical tools, charting capabilities and financial news.

The gift will be dedicated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony tonight in the lower level of Monroe Hall. The ceremony will feature remarks from Bridge Chairman and CEO Thomas M. Wendel and Commerce School Dean Carl P. Zeithaml. Demonstrations of the new technology will follow in the Bridge Center.
