At the ACC-Disney Baseball Blast at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Orlando this weekend, seven ACC players were named to the All Tournament Team. Also on the team was pitcher Casey Kennedy, who played for the Cavaliers for three years before transferring to Central Florida for his senior season.
Last season, Kennedy had a 3.86 ERA and a 4-6 record in 12 games. His four wins ranked him second in Virginia last year. The Boca Raton, Fla., native surrendered 80 hits and a team-low 15 walks in 70 innings. He went the entire season without giving up a home run.
The ACC players on the All Tournament Team include four UNC players -- outfielder Adam Greenberg, catcher Dan Moylan, first baseman Ryan Blake and pitcher Chris Elmore. Clemson third baseman Khalil Greene and pitcher Scott Berney and Wake Forest catcher Dan Conway also were honored.
World Cup champions end boycott
The U.S. women's soccer team that won the World Cup this summer agreed to a five-year contract Saturday, ending their month-long contract dispute with the U.S. Soccer Federation.
The team, which includes stars such as Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain, will begin training today under new coach April Heinrichs. Heinrichs stepped down as Virginia women's coach Jan. 18 to coach the women's national team.
The women boycotted the Australia Cup because they felt they were not paid enough. The U.S. Soccer Federation sent a team of college-age players that won the tournament. The team plays an exhibition game against Norway Feb. 6 in Fort Lauderdale.
According to The New York Times, the settlement will enable each player to earn about $130,000 this year in salaries and bonuses. The players would also be permitted to hold their own indoor tour.
The contract is in part contingent on the formation of a women's professional league in 2001.
The USSF scheduled a news conference for today in New York to "discuss the progress" of negotiations.
