Wrestlers stumble against Tech after dropping first three bouts

After a lopsided victory over James Madison last Wednesday, the Virginia wrestling team took a step backward Saturday by falling to Virginia Tech, 23-20, at Memorial Gymnasium. The loss drops the Cavaliers down to 3-5.

The Hokies claimed the match's first three bouts and took a 14-0 lead before Cav Jimi Massey opened up the Virginia scoring with a decision over Tech's Ryan McGrath at 197 pounds. Virginia went on to win the next two bouts as Josh Etu and Steve Garland won at the heavyweight and 125 classes, respectively, to cut the Hokie lead to 14-9.

But Sean Gray's pin at 3:12 into his 141 bout with Matt Viola sealed the win for Virginia Tech. Cavaliers John Pozniak and Don Carlo-Clauss also registered wins - although Carlo-Clauss' came by forfeit - but the early surge by Virginia Tech was too much to overcome for the Cavs.

Tennis teams take to the court

The Virginia men's and women's tennis teams both continued their hot starts this weekend with dual match wins.

The men defeated Columbia, 6-1, to move to 2-0 on the season. Third year Brian Vahaly, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's third-ranked singles player, led the way for the Cavs by winning the top singles match, 6-3, 6-2, over Lion Akrem Zaman. Vahaly also teamed up with third year Huntley Montgomery to give the Cavaliers a win in the top doubles match.

    Baseball loses three to LSU

The Virginia baseball team opened its season with an inauspicious start as No. 6 Louisiana State dominated the Cavs in both ends of a double header Saturday and again yesterday.

The Tigers cruised Saturday to an 8-0 shutout victory followed by a 13-2 win in Baton Rouge behind strong pitching. In the first game, LSU's Brian Tallet threw a complete game three-hit shutout, striking out seven and walking only two. The nightcap featured Tiger redshirt freshman Bo Pettit, who pitched six shutout innings.

Yesterday, LSU was victorious again, 13-4. Over the three game series, the Cavs were outscored 34-6.
