Duo hammers out Cav records

A pair of freshman Cavaliers tossed their way into the record books over the weekend, breaking school records in the hammer throw at the East Carolina relays.

Bill Johnston shattered Virginia's second-oldest men's outdoor record with a throw of 56.66 meters, more than 11 feet better than the 21-year-old record.

Elise Mitchell set her second Cav record of the season with 51.86-meter throw that edged the 1995 record of 51.30.

A third Virginia freshman, Tim Bilmanis, won the discus competition with a throw of 47.56 meters.

Elite eight

The Virginia women's crew novice eight was named the ACC Crew of the Week yesterday.

Freshman coxswain McRae Petrey and rowers Andrea Czarkowski, Emily Richard, Amanda Kennedy, Meaghan Keeley, Becky Sell, Abby Ramirez, Shannon Tocchio, Lauren Platenberg were recognized for their victories over Ohio State and Michigan in the ACC/Big Ten Double Dual Regatta Sunday.

Hawkeye joins fold

Field hockey coach Jessica Wilk announced Tuesday that Melisa Meccage has been hired as a new Cavalier assistant coach.

Meccage, an Iowa graduate who leaves her position as head coach at St. Mary's Hall in San Antonio, Tex., was the 1997 Big Ten Athlete of the Year. She was the captain of the U.S. Under-21 team that won the bronze medal in the 1997 Junior Pan Am games.

Forest still standing

The Wake Forest men's basketball team earned a 62-59 overtime win against in-state rival N.C. State in the semifinals of the National Invitation Tournament Tuesday.

The Deacons face Notre Dame tonight in the NIT final.
