After dishing out a handful of beatings this season, the Virginia women's lacrosse team found itself on the receiving end of one Saturday afternoon, falling to North Carolina 12-5.
The No. 3 Cavaliers (6-2, 0-2 ACC) cut the Tar Heel lead to 5-4 a few minutes after halftime, but No. 7 Carolina (6-2, 2-0) put the game out of reach with seven of the last eight goals.
"In the first half, we were in it," Virginia coach Julie Myers said. "We were not really playing a solid game, but we were able to maximize some of our possessions. I thought we were in good shape there. But things just started getting more and more quiet. I saw our team play today differently than I've ever seen them play - ever - in this entire year. I've never seen them perform that poorly, I've never seen them miss so many opportunities and I've never seen them stand around as much as I did today on the field."
Although Virginia senior attackers Sarah Gercke and Jamie Haas tallied two goals apiece, the Cav attack struggled as a whole.
"We were standing and watching," Myers said. "We didn't move the ball, we didn't move our bodies. We literally just stood there and lost the ball without doing anything."
One of the lone bright spots for the Cavaliers was the play of senior goalie Francis Segarra, who was shelled by the Tar Heels but still managed 13 saves.
"I thought she played really well," senior midfielder Kelly Allenbach said of Segarra. "When our defense was making mistakes and not working together and falling apart, she saved us a couple of times, which was really key. She had a really good day."
