A Charlottesville resident died early yesterday morning after being shot in the head late Monday night.
The shooting occurred in the 900th block of Paoli Street at approximately 11:45 p.m..
Authorities identified the victim as Jonathan Tibbs, a man in his early 20s.
Charlottesville Police responded within 60 seconds to a 911 call Monday night and found the victim lying on the ground, Police Detective Blaine Cosgro said.
Police recovered several shell casings from the scene of the shooting and now are investigating the incident. Police are pursuing some leads in the case, Cosgro said.
Tibbs died at the University Medical Center at about 10 minutes after midnight because of the gunshot wound, said Hospital spokesman Jeff Ware.
Tibbs' body has been sent to Richmond for an autopsy, Ware said.
Paoli Street is a residential area of Charlottesville between 9th and 10th Streets, north of Main Street.
Lt. Gary Pleasants said police spend more time patrolling the area near Paoli Street than they do anywhere else in the city so it would be difficult to increase patrolling in that area.
"We are there constantly," Pleasants said.
He said police receive "constant complaints of drug dealing and things associated with it" from the area residents.
Tibbs' death is Charlottesville's second homicide this year.
Winston Keith Morris was shot and killed Jan. 29 outside an apartment complex on Prospect Ave.
No arrests have been made in that case.
