Camping out for the game
Most people who want floor seats for Virginia basketball games show up a few hours before the game. But for this weekend's final home game against Maryland, second-year College student Praveen Kathpal defied the rule. Kathpal spent a whopping 27 hours at University Hall in order to ensure himself a floor seat.
Kathpal set up his tent outside the U-Hall doors Friday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. in anticipation of the 7:00 PM game the next day. With the exception of visits from friends and the company of his girlfriend, Kathpal endured the hours of waiting on his own. He says he camped out to send a message to people about the importance of Cavalier basketball. "My ultimate goal is to make camping out a requirement to get floor seats," Kathpal said.
No other fans showed up for tickets until around 6 a.m. the next morning, he said. "I was woken up by the sun rising and those people making noises."
Kathpal describes himself as a loyal Virginia basketball fan. He always sits in the first few rows and has only missed two games this season. He hopes to camp out next season as well.
"This is the best experience I have had at U-Hall. It was definitely worth it. I have never seen the fans so excited before," Kathpal said about the game.
