Police arrest two students after assault

Two third-year College students, Gonzalo Carrion and Joaquin Bueno, were arrested early yesterday morning by University Police on assault and battery charges for the alleged assault of University graduate Shahnawaz Khan.

The suspects were arrested at about 3 a.m. yesterday and were released on a $5,000 Personal Recognizance bond, University Police Capt. Michael Coleman said.

The alleged assault took place early Saturday morning at a party held at La Casa Bolivar, the Spanish House, with the victim claiming injuries to the face, including a loose tooth, a fractured nose and a concussion.

Khan said while attempting to exit the house and go outside for fresh air he saw suspect Joaquin Bueno. He said he then asked if Bueno was the same person he allegedly had a dispute with at a fraternity two weeks earlier.

Khan said they exchanged insults, Bueno pushed him and he pushed back, and then Bueno punched him. Bueno and Carrion then allegedly dragged him outside and began kicking him.

"I was screaming 'call the cops,'" Khan said. He said other partygoers prevented him from using the emergency phone outside of the house to call for emergency help and the police.

He added that the police then arrived and took statements. Khan said he then went to the magistrate and had warrants issued for Bueno and Carrion's arrest and returned home before going to the hospital.

Carrion, a suspect in the case, said he did "kick [Khan] in the face once," but said Khan instigated the incident.

He said Khan "recognized a guy in the house he had a grudge on and jumped into the house and grabbed him by the throat."

Carrion said the person who was grabbed by the throat punched Khan, and then Carrion was attempting to shut Khan out of the house when Khan grabbed him, adding that he acted in self-defense.

"I want justice to be done, and this ... should make any thinking person outraged," Khan said.
