Ramirez, Vizzuso earn ACC scholarships

Virginia swimmer Austin Ramirez and former Cavalier field hockey superstar Michelle Vizzuso were two of the 16 ACC scholar-athletes to receive a 2000 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Award yesterday.

The award provides a $5,000 scholarship which goes towards the recipient's postgraduate education.

    Ramirez, a senior in the Engineering School, won three individual events and also won ACC Most Valuable Swimmer honors as the Virginia men's swimming team captured its second straight ACC title Saturday in Chapel Hill. The two-time Academic All-American won his fourth consecutive Conference titles in the 1,650-yard freestyle and the 500 free.

    Swinging from the rough

    The Virginia men's golf team finished 13th out of 17 teams at Puerto Rico's San Juan Shoot-out yesterday. Cavalier top finisher James Driscoll tied for 18th as the Cavs posted a combined score of 896, 43 strokes behind first-place Georgia Tech.

    Reaching for the Schuye

    Virginia forward Schuye LaRue, who averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds in two Cavalier games last week, won her fifth ACC Rookie of the Week award of the season Monday.

    North Carolina junior guard Nikki Teasley grabbed ACC Player of the Week honors on the women's side, while Wake Forest sophomore center Darius Songalia earned men's honors. Tar Heel shooting guard Joseph Forte was named men's Rookie of the Week.
