Womack sentenced to $1,000 fine

An Albemarle County Circuit Court judge followed a jury recommendation Friday and set University running back Antwoine Womack's punishment as a $1,000 fine after his conviction on a misdemeanor assault and battery charge Dec. 16, 1999.

Judge Paul M. Peatross Jr. ruled that Womack must pay $25 per month until he graduates from the University and then must pay the remaining balance.

Womack also is responsible for the accumulated court costs of $1,016. Womack's attorney, Thomas Shuttleworth of Virginia Beach, brought forth a motion to set aside the guilty jury verdict, but it was later withdrawn, Asst. Commonwealth Attorney Richard Dolorie said.

Womack has a review court date set for April 2, 2001, at which time the court will review his payments and decide how the remainder of his fine will be paid in full, Dolorie said.

Womack was convicted of misdemeanor assault and battery Dec. 16, 1999, after originally facing two felony charges of malicious wounding for his part in a Feb. 7, 1999 group assault of former University student Jonathon Dean and then fourth-year student Cabral Thornton behind Kerchof Hall.

Convicted with Womack were former University defensive back Adrian Burnim and Charlottesville resident Kevin Cromartie. The jury recommended sentences of six months jail time for Burnim and Cromartie. Womack and co-defendants Burnim and Cromartie all pleaded not guilty to the felony charges of malicious bodily harm.

Womack also faced University Judiciary Committee charges and was scheduled to stand trial Feb. 5.

The Committee postponed the trial and then complainant Dean dropped the charges he had brought against Womack, ending all Committee proceedings.

Michael Colley, assistant athletics media relations director, said Womack has been on a leave of absence from the football team for about a year and has not played or practiced during that time, but will most likely be on the field in time for next season.

Antwoine Womack could not be reached for comment and his attorney, Thomas Shuttleworth, declined to comment.
