Softball splits doubleheader with Fighting Camels

The Virginia softball team split a doubleheader against Campbell yesterday at The Park. After falling 3-2 in the first game, Cav senior Chrissy Quinn tossed a three-hit shutout in a 5-0 Cavalier victory.

Quinn allowed three singles, struck out 10 and walked only one to earn her seventh victory. Sophomore first baseman Kristen Dennis led Virginia (19-33) offensively in the second game, going 3-for-3 with a three-run homer and a double. Freshman shortstop Johanna Kaiser went 2-for-3 with two RBIs against the Fighting Camels.

In the first game, Campbell (17-27) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman catcher Shannon O'Bryan and sophomores right fielder Leslie Standiford and first baseman Tiffany Moyer had consecutive two-out RBI hits to put the Fighting Camels on top.

    Virginia fought back, scoring two runs at the bottom of the fifth. The Cavs loaded the bases in the fifth after pulling within one run, but Campbell sophomore pitcher Kathy Freaney got Cavalier senior center fielder Corinne Good to ground out to third to end the rally.

    Tuesday in Blacksburg, Virginia dropped a pair of games to Virginia Tech by identical 5-3 scores. The Cavaliers hit four solo home runs, three of which came in the second game.

    The Key to Tampa

    After four seasons with the New York Jets, wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson was traded to the Tampa Bay Bucaneers Tuesday night for the 13th and 27th overall picks in this weekend's NFL draft.

    Johnson, 27, signed a deal yesterday that will give him $7 million per year over eight years with a $13 million signing bonus. The two-time Pro-Bowl wide receiver and 1996 No. 1 overall pick caught 305 passes for 4,108 yards and 31 touchdowns in his stint in New York.

    Jacksonville State wideout dies after stabbing

    Jacksonville State wide receiver Ricardo Tillman died Monday morning of complications from a March 19 stabbing incident outside of a Jacksonville night club.

    The sophomore held school records for career receptions and yards at the Division I-AA school. A memorial service for him was held yesterday at the Jacksonville University Chapel.
