Temple taps Staley as women's hoops coach

Former Virginia women's basketball star Dawn Staley was named the new head women's basketball coach at Temple University yesterday.

Staley, who played at Virginia from 1989 to 1992, led the Cavaliers to four NCAA Tournaments and three appearances in the Final Four. In 1991 and 1992, she was named National Player of the Year.

    She also played professionally in Europe and for the ABL and WBNA, where she led the Charlotte Sting to the Eastern Conference Finals in 1999. As a member of the U.S. National Team, Staley won a gold medal in the 1996 Olympics.

    Staley takes over for Kristen Foley, who resigned after a 10-18 campaign last season.

    Run Louie run

    The Virginia track and field team hosts its only home meet of the season tomorrow at Lannigan Field. The Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational kicks off with field events at 8:30 a.m. Races start with the women's 5,000-meter at noon and are scheduled to last until the 4x400 women's relay finishes at about 5 p.m.

    Yellow submarine

    Both the baseball and softball teams are travelling to Atlanta this weekend to face their Georgia Tech counterparts.

    Virginia baseball (17-19-1, 5-7 ACC) is coming off a series win against Duke. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech (28-8, 10-2) has registered three-game sweeps in three of its four conference series. They currently hold a 10-game winning streak. The Cavs face the Yellow Jackets tonight and tomorrow at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

    The Virginia softball team (19-33, 0-2) faces the Yellow Jackets (24-23, 3-3) tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Virginia split a doubleheader with Campbell Wednesday.

    GW Classic cancelled

    The Virginia rowing team will not be attending the George Washington Invitational Crew Classic, which was cancelled due to the threat of violence in Washington, D.C.

    The meet was scheduled for tomorrow, but several of the 12 teams that were scheduled to compete withdrew from the event after groups planned to protest the World Trade Organization meeting at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund buildings, which are situated near the Potomac River.
