Track impresses at Onesty competition

The Virginia women's and men's track and field teams had no problems wowing the home crowd with impressive first- and second-place team finishes at the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational Saturday at Lannigan Field.

The Cav women overtook Liberty, their closest competitor, by outscoring the Flames 46-4 in the meet's final two events - the pole vault and discus throw - to post 193 total points, winning by 31.

Virginia grabbed four of the top five positions in the pole vault, led by freshman Vika Osipenko, who won with a vault of 3.20 meters. Junior Hilary Wilson won the discus with a throw of 49.24 after placing third in the hammer throw.

"I feel like for who we had out there, I was pretty happy with the results," Virginia coach Randy Bungard said.

In their 12-team competition, the Cav men finished second behind Rutgers with 105 points to the Scarlet Knights' 146.

On the men's side, freshman Brian Kollar won the javelin with a throw of 68.98 while fellow rookie Bill Johnston finished a close second in the hammer at 57.58, a new school record.

Senior Rauhn Turner provided crucial points by finishing second in the men's 200 (21.49 seconds) and 400 (48.01) races, as well as anchoring the second-place 4x400 relay team (3:17.38).

"I'm happy with the 200 time," Turner said. "21.49 is pretty good for this early in the season. Going into the ACCs next week, I'm extremely confident I'm going to place very high."

Junior Dana Coons posted a convincing victory in the 3,000. Her time of 9:57.18 blew away her nearest competition by over 24 seconds.

"I went out really fast," said Coons. "I didn't get my best time ever in this, but it was close."
