Cavalier swim teams claim CSCAA All-America honors

The Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams both received Academic All-America honors from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).

The CSCAA rates teams according to their academic performance. The women's team garnered an excellent rating with a team GPA of 3.00, while the men received a Commendable rating for their team GPA of 2.84.

Individually, five Cavaliers were honored by the CSCAA for their academic endeavors. Austin Ramirez, Jamie Grimes, Evan Taylor, Rebecca Cronk and Emily Carrig were honored for having a 3.5 GPA or above.

Tennis duo awarded

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Monday that Christie Schweer and Kelly Weaver, two seniors on the Cavalier women's tennis team, earned Scholar-Athlete All-America honors. The team was also one of the 73 Division I teams nationwide to receive the All-Academic America Team award.

    Parker heads to Kentucky

    Jason Parker, one of the top prep power forwards in the nation last year, enrolled at Kentucky after being denied admission to North Carolina. Parker was a Parade All-American and twice was named the North Carolina player of the year at West Charlotte High.

    Complications arose this summer when Carolina officials reviewed Parker's college admission test scores. However, Kentucky enrolled the 6-foot-8, 250 pound Parker after discovering he did not receive credit for numerous gifted courses he took. Parker spent last year at Fork Union (VA) Military Academy trying to achieve a qualifying NCAA test score.

    Jackets Hesitant to Reschedule Game

    Georgia Tech would rather not reschedule the Black Coaches Association Classic against Virginia Tech that was cancelled by lighting Sunday, said Dave Braine, Georgia Tech athletic director.

    The Hokies had proposed a December 1st date for the game, but Georgia Tech has a game with archrival Georgia scheduled for Nov. 25.

    Maryland Loses Tackle to Richmond

    Tony Charles, a 6-foot-3 defensive tackle and former All-Met selection at DeMatha High in Washington, D.C., transferred from Maryland to Richmond. Charles recently transferred to Maryland from his original school, Florida.

    According to Terrapins coach Ron Vanderlinden, Charles had not been medically cleared to play. Charles joins a plethora of former DeMatha players at Richmond, including quarterback Sean Gustus, running backs Kenny Dantzler and TyRonne Turner and fullback Scott Fulton.
