Eskandarian claims ACC award

Alecko Eskandarian hasn't even attended a full week of courses, but already he's jumped to the head of the class in ACC men's soccer. The freshman forward was honored as the conference Player of the Week yesterday for his stellar play in the 2000 Virginia Soccer Classic.

Eskandarian, who only months ago was playing with Bergen Catholic High of Oradell, N.J., scored three goals and contributed one assist in two Virginia wins, all as a reserve. In Sunday's 7-1 victory over Jacksonville, Eskandarian notched two goals and one assist.

Rain, rain go away

The women's soccer game between Virginia and Alabama-Birmingham scheduled for yesterday was postponed because of heavy rain and lightning. The game will be played today at 7 p.m. at Klšckner Stadium.

    Football lands Cook

Rikki Cook threw family ties out the window earlier this week when he committed to a future with the Cavalier football team. Instead of joining his brother Ron to play for Virginia Tech, Cook, rated the No. 2 prospect in New Jersey by SuperPrep Magazine, decided to follow his own route.

In his 1999 season at Montclair High in New Jersey, Cook, a 6-foot-1, 235-pound fullback, helped his team finish 10-2. He also went on to display his individual skills by rushing for 1,016 yards, averaging more than 10 per carry. Cook bench-presses 365 pounds, squats 610 and runs the 40 in 4.52 seconds, and, for good measure, is reputed for having a strong academic drive.

Although Virginia Tech did not choose to recruit him, Cook had scholarship offers from Georgia Tech, N.C State, Temple and Wake Forest. Cook most likely will play fullback for the Cavaliers.

FSU lineman rough off the field

Florida State defensive end David Warren apparently forgot about the sore back that hobbled him in the team's season opener a week ago. Warren, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound senior, was charged with misdemeanor battery after allegedly carrying his ex-girlfriend out of his apartment and tossing her into some nearby bushes Saturday night. The Tallahassee Democrat reported that when Sarah Lamothe, 22, came to his apartment to retrieve some personal belongings, Warren became enraged and slung her over his shoulder before carrying her outside.

Paramedics treated Lamothe that same evening for scratches on her legs and a swollen hand. The hand injury reportedly was obtained as she tried to grab the door on her way out, and it closed on her. Warren, a 21-year-old criminology major, was assigned to appear in court Oct. 10.
