The Nittany Lion field hockey team was simply too much for the out-gunned Cavaliers, felling them 3-1 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge yesterday in St. Louis.
Virginia was out-shot 15-4, but sophomore Katie Slocum provided the lone bright spot for the Cavaliers by tipping in a direct shot from junior Jessica Coleman during the first half. The goal tied the game at one apiece, but Penn State went on to score two unanswered goals in the second half to win.

Cavalier thrown to Lions
After helping the Virginia wrestling team reach the Top 25 at the 1999 and 2000 NCAA Wrestling Championships, Cavalier assistant coach Brendan Buckley was named the new coach at Columbia.
Buckley served as the top assistant under Virginia coach Lenny Bernstein for two seasons. He helped coach three All-Americans during his two-year tenure, including 1999-2000 NCAA runner-up Steve Garland (125 lbs.) this past season.
Tiki god
Thomas Jones, Virginia's All-American tailback last season, made his professional debut for the Arizona Cardinals yesterday, but he was out-run by fellow Cav alumnus Tiki Barber.
Barber, Jones' predecessor at Virginia, had a career high performance with 144 yards and scored two touchdowns for the New York Giants' in their 21-16 win over Arizona. The highlight of the game was his 78-yard TD run in the second quarter, the fourth-longest run in Giants history.
Jones, the No. 7 pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, was only able to manage 16 yds on 12 carries. Also, Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne played in his first NFL game as Barber's backup and ran for 78 yds on 23 carries, including a 10-yard TD run.
