Pipe dreams
The 96-year-old E.M. Skinner pipe organ in Old Cabell Hall underwent a considerable amount of restoration over the past few years.
The recent tune-up will be on display during a recital tonight at 8:15 by Peggy Kelley Reinburg.
Reinburg, a graduate of Northwestern's School of Music, is a world-renowned organist. She comes to the University shortly after having completed her 10th European tour, third-year Architecture student Dawn Balsom, who works in the ticket box at Old Cabell Hall, said.
The performance will inaugurate the restored organ, Balsom said. Tickets cost $5 for recital tickets.
Saturday, Reinburg will lead a workshop, entitled "Exploring the E.M. Skinner Organ," with Xavier A. Wilhemy, the certified organ pipe builder responsible for renovating the organ.
Wilhemy first began the renovation in December of 1998. It was not completed until March of this year.
The workshop will feature a guided tour of the Skinner organ and will even allow participants the chance to try their hands at playing the instrument.
The Charlottesville Organist Guild is co-sponsoring the events.
