The Missouri Athletic Club announced yesterday that Virginia men's soccer senior forward Ryan Trout was one of 15 candidates for the Club's prestigious player of the year award. The MAC chooses the official National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas award for Division I players.
Trout has one goal and three assists for five points on the year. He has accumulated 19 goals and 35 assists for 73 points in his Virginia career.
The winner of the crystal soccer ball trophy will be selected by NSCAA member Division I coaches and honored at a Missouri Athletic Club Jan. 1 and at the NSCAA convention later that month.
Virginia sophomore midfielder Kyle Martino was also named one of five "players to watch" this season. Martino is the Cavaliers' third-leading scorer with three goals and three assists for 12 points. He has 10 goals and 10 assists for 30 points in his career.

Men's tennis sinks
Despite sweeping doubles play Sunday, the Virginia men's tennis team came up short against Illinois State at the Navy Invitational. The Cavs trailed 6-1 after singles play Saturday, but only managed to close the gap to 6-4 in the Annapolis, Md. tournament.
The doubles team of Cav senior Tommy Croker and freshman Preston Walters defeated Redbirds junior Ricky Heath and senior Yew Ming Si at the No. 1 doubles spot.
The No. 2 doubles pairing of junior Jason Romesburg and sophomore Michael Duquette downed freshman Brent Steven and junior Albert Piasecki.
In the third and final double match of the game, junior Jonathan Chou and freshman Gregory Alpert were victorious over sophomores Jason Smit and Andrew Martin.
Only Virginia freshman Patrick Guarnieri was able to win a singles match against ISU. He defeated Martin in straight sets Saturday, 6-2, 6-1.
After splitting eight singles and four doubles matches with Navy Friday, the Cavaliers succumbed to Oklahoma 5-1 on Saturday. With their loss to Illinois State Sunday, Virginia finished the weekend with a 0-2-1 record in tournament play.
Return to prominence
In the latest Associated Press college football poll, Florida State and Clemson ranked No. 1 and No. 5 respectively, marking the first time since Nov. 3, 1997 that two ACC teams were ranked in the top five. In 1997, Florida State captured the third spot while North Carolina was ranked No. 5.
Clemson returns to the top five for the first time since Sept. 13, 1988, when they were ranked No. 3.
Florida State (5-0, 3-0 ACC) was ranked second last week but reclaimed the top spot with a 59-7 shellacking of Maryland. Clemson (5-0, 3-0) climbed three spots to No. 5 with a convincing 52-22 win over Duke.
