If you listen to Debbie Ryan, it would be easy to believe the entire Virginia women's basketball team graduated with second team All-ACC point guard Renee Robinson last year. But with three returning starters, including talented sophomore forward Schuye LaRue, and strong freshmen like Safiya Grant and Anna Prillaman, the Cavs hope to fill the void at the point and improve on last year's ACC regular season title.
"The No. 1 worry is the point guard position," Ryan said, but "we have good wing play and an absolutely fabulous inside player in Schuye LaRue. We have good power players like [6-foot-2 forward] Dean'na Mitchelson, who's going to give us power inside. We've got a lot of strengths."
The team has experience turning a deaf ear to its critics. Last year, they failed to make AP preseason rankings but finished the season ranked 19th by the AP and 14th in the USA Today/ESPN poll, claiming the ACC title and a spot in the NCAA Sweet 16 along the way.
