The Virginia baseball team will have two new faces in the dugout this spring.
Coach Dennis Womack named Chip Schaffner and Luis Giraldo as the two newest members of his coaching staff. Schaffner will replace former assistant Steve Whitmyer, who left to take the helm at the Naval Academy Schaffner, who will be the new Cav pitching coach, has been involved with the game at many levels. He was a player at Michigan State, a scout for Sportsview Online, and most recently, an assistant coach at Georgetown College in Kentucky.

Giraldo, a senior captain last year for the Cavaliers, will test his leadership abilities in a new facet as a graduate assistant. He ended his collegiate career with 118 hits and 94 runs, playing several infield positions.
ACColades
The ACC football Defensive Back of the Week is Cavalier senior Byron Thweatt. The outside linebacker was in on a career-high 19 tackles and had his second sack of the season in Virginia's 17-6 win over North Carolina Saturday.
Following a spectacular meet against Clemson, Virginia sophomore Cara Lane was named ACC Swimmer of the Week. Lane won the 200-yard butterfly and the 500 freestyle and finished second in the 200 free.
Field hockey midfielder Carrie Goodloe received ACC Player of the Week honors for her tremendous efforts in last week's games. She had the winning goal in overtime against Duke and assisted on Jess Coleman's winning goal in the Yale game. Goodloe has assisted on six game-winners, tying the Virginia single-season record. She also ranks 13th in the country in assists.
Tournament time
Goodloe and the fourth-seeded Virginia field hockey team begin the ACC Tournament against the fifth-seeded Duke team at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in College Park, Md. The Cavs beat the Blue Devils in overtime in Durham over the weekend.
No. 1 seed North Carolina, second-seeded Wake Forest and third-seeded Maryland also are competing for the chance to play in Sunday's championship game.
