Eskandarian grabs top freshman award

Soccer America has named Virginia forward Alecko Eskandarian the 2000 Freshman of the Year for his outstanding performance in his rookie season.

Leading the Cavaliers in points, goals scored, assists and shots taken, Eskandarian has become no stranger to awards.

He also earned ACC Rookie of the Year, First Team All-ACC and Player of the Year in the state of Virginia honors.

Eskandarian scored 38 points, a Virginia freshman record, formerly held by George Gelnovatch, now the team's coach. Eskandarian's 16 goals this season also tie Gelnovatch's freshman record.

Starting in 22 of 24 games, Eskandarian led the men's soccer team to a 17-6-1 record, a second place finish in the ACC and a NCAA tournament quarterfinal appearance.

Sportsmanship in a bottle

The University of Maryland administration published open letters yesterday addressing the disorderly behavior of some of its fans following the Duke-Maryland basketball game Saturday.

After the game, Maryland fans in student sections behind the Blue Devils' bench threw bottles, cups, ice and other debris at Duke fans and players.

The mother of Blue Devil forward Carlos Boozer was struck in the temple with a glass bottle full of water and needed medical treatment. The mother of Duke point guard Jason Williams also was hit with a cup full of water.

In a letter addressing the situation, University of Maryland President C. D. Mote Jr. offered his apologies to the Duke fans and team. He stated the university police are conducting an investigation into the misconduct.

Mote also noted that he asked Athletic Director Debbie Yow to make any changes necessary in protecting the future safety of visiting players and fans in Cole Field House.

Policy problem for the Bowdens

Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden said he wants to name his youngest son Jeff as Seminole offensive coordinator to replace Mark Richt. Richt left the Seminoles to become head coach at Georgia.

A possible nepotism violation, however, may prevent Bowden from hiring his son. Florida State University policy states that "employment of relatives within a single organizational unit is discouraged, except when it becomes necessary because of shortage of qualified personnel"
