Rockin' Cabell, A Cappella style
When you think of non-Nickelodeon game shows back in those early days in TV land before "Survivor," "Millionaire" and "Temptation Island," what is the first thing that comes to your mind?
No, not "Family Feud."
It's "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego."
This Monday at 8 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall, a part of the show will be coming to the University -- it's a cappella, Rockapella style.
When you think of a cappella, you think of them, not of the Virginia Gentlemen, or the Virginia Belles. You knew Rockapella even before you knew the word a cappella.
Rockapella, the singing group who, as a result of their performance on the Spike Lee "Do it A-Cappella" TV special in 1991, spent five seasons as the band for the PBS children's game show.
They have appeared on stage with Billy Joel, Sting, Don Henley, Styx and Warren Zevon at venues including Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall and Carnegie Hall.
As well as their TV and radio specials, Rockapella has performed solo concerts across the country. And now they are headed for U. Va.
"We are very excited to have them coming to the University and on such short notice," said Jennifer Monges, Program Advisor in Newcomb Hall. "We only began talking to them in December."
For some time now, Monges has been receiving requests from University a cappella groups for Rockapella to appear here.
"Our a cappella groups have been asking for them and we are glad to be bringing them to U. Va.," Monges said.
Originally, Monges wanted to have the University's a cappella groups perform outside Old Cabell before the feature presentation. However, with such short notice, and with there being too many groups to have one open for Rockapella, Monges decided to have the single lead performance.
Tickets are available in the Newcomb Hall Box Office. Prices are $5 in advance for students and $7 at the door.
