Massey pins down ACC award with pair of weekend victories

Virginia junior wrestler Jimi Massey was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week following two dual match victories over North Carolina and Old Dominion University this weekend.

Massey, who wrestles in the 184-pound weight class, beat North Carolina sophomore Nick Richmond 11-6 on Saturday and Old Dominion's Matt Small 7-6 on Sunday. He became the second Cavalier to win the award this season. Virginia senior P.J. Bory won the award Jan. 22.

Massey is 15-6 overall this season, 9-1 in dual matches. With his victory at North Carolina, Massey remains a perfect 3-0 in the ACC. Of his 15 wins, three have come by major decision and one has come by fall.

Tar Heel junior JohnMark Bentley, a 149-pound wrestler, shared this week's award with Massey.

Pass the rook

Virginia freshman forward J.C. Mathis won ACC Co-Rookie of the Week honors for his performance in the Cavaliers' wins over Maryland and Wake Forest this weekend. With senior Stephane Dondon injured, Mathis stepped up with 10 points and four rebounds over the two games. Mathis shared the award with N.C. State freshman Trey Guidry.
