Mitchell smashes own school record

Virginia's Eliese Mitchell broke her own school record in the 20-pound weight throw at the Last Chance Meet at Virginia Tech this weekend.

    Mitchell won the event after breaking the record by 10 centimeters when she threw for 18.71 meters. Mitchell, who now is ranked 14th nationally in the 20-pound weight throw, has broken her own record three times this season - the first at the Winter Invitational in January and the second at the Christopher Newport University Winter Frolic earlier this month.

    Mitchell and others from the Virginia indoor track team who qualify begin the NCAA Indoors Championship on March 10 in Fayetteville, Ark.

    Virginia jumps to No. 7 in AP poll

    Following a 20-point blowout win over North Carolina on Sunday, the Virginia men's basketball team moved up two spots in the Associated Press poll from No. 9 to No. 7. The Tar Heels dropped from No. 2 to No. 4 with the loss.

    Duke - after routing Georgia Tech last Tuesday but barely edging Wake Forest, 82-80, on Saturday - moved up two spots to No. 2 in the poll. Wake Forest held onto the top 25 at No. 23 despite its loss to Duke.

    FSU linebacker dies following workout

    Florida State freshman linebacker Devaughn Darling died yesterday following an off-season workout in Tallahassee.

    A Florida State spokesman said Darling's cause of death was not yet determined, but that he was working out with his twin brother Devard, also a Seminole football player, when he collapsed.

    Darling made 11 tackles in the 2000 season, including two solo tackles in the Seminoles' 54-7 win over Clemson on Nov. 4.
