Mem Gym sprints ahead
As frequent gym-goers returned to their haven at Memorial Gymnasium after Winter Break, they discovered that something was missing: part of the women's locker room.
Now in its place is another calorie-burning room filled with four new pieces of cardiovascular equipment: two treadmills and two elliptical machines. Other cardio machines, new windows and open lighting also have been installed.
"We are excited to add the cardio equipment because we are the facility with the fewest of those pieces," said Sarah Benbow, Mem Gym facility manager.
Not to be outdone, the weight room also received new equipment. Lightweight dumbbells, ranging from 3 to 20 pounds, two abductor and adductor machines, and a 45-degree back extension machine now sit in the weight room.
"These plans have been in the works for a while," Benbow said. "We basically had a lot of requests for lighter dumbbells and treadmills."
To keep pace with other gyms around Grounds, Mem Gym will install two televisions high on the walls in the added room by the end of the week. Those working out will be able to plug in headphones and listen to television and radio, Benbow added.
Even with the new equipment, the expanded room has a larger stretching area than it had before the renovation.
The improvements made to Mem Gym have been well-received, as many have noticed the added gym-flow.
"Because of the new equipment, more people are here than ever," third-year Commerce student Janine Vanzetta said.
But Mem Gym's plans are not yet finished.
According to Benbow, there was not enough time over Winter Break to complete all the renovations. Regulars to the gym will have to wait until Spring Break for a new floor to be installed.
