Baseball drops game at JMU to end win streak

Last night, the Virginia baseball team (23-22) fell to James Madison (25-18-1) on a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning, 7-6, ending the Cavaliers' four-game winning streak.

The Dukes took an early lead in the bottom of the third with four runs but Virginia slowly fought back.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, senior designated hitter Jon Benick, 3-for-4 on the night, smashed a ball out of the field for two RBIs. The home run tied the game and sent the match into extra innings.

But Virginia failed to score in the top of the 10th and the Dukes' sophomore third baseman Brent Metheny singled to right field with the bases loaded to end the game.

Transfer joins women's basketball

The Virginia women's basketball team acquired a new recruit to add to its 2001-02 roster. Coach Debbie Ryan announced that Cherrise Graham, a 5-foot-7 guard transferring from Purdue University, will join the squad along with five other newcomers. Along with Graham, Virginia has signed LaTonya Blue, Jocelyn Logan-Friend, Bethany Lesueur, Lynette O'Reggio and Brandi Teamer.

During her high school career Graham was honored as a First-Team Parade All-American and led her high school, Archbishop Carroll in Philadelphia, to its first Philadelphia Catholic League Championship since 1979.

Men's lacrosse receives commitments

Two high school seniors have been added to the Virginia men's lacrosse list of recruits, coach Dom Starsia announced yesterday.

Steve Holmes, a 6-1, 195-pound defenseman, hails from Gwynedd Valley, Pa., and was a first-team All-State selection last spring at Germantown Academy.

Nathan Kenney, a 6-0, 185-pound midfielder and the younger brother of current Cavalier midfielder, Derek Kenney, received a first-team All-Midwest nod last season for his role at Detroit County Day School.

Women's soccer adds sixth recruit

Virginia women's soccer coach Steve Swanson announced that Gillian Hatch of Whitefish Bay, Wis., is the newest Cavalier recruit. The team has now secured six commitments.

As a sophomore, Hatch was the Wisconsin Gatorade High School Player of the Year. She also was a member of the Parade All-America Team and has played for both the Under-16 and Under-18 United States National Teams.
