Creswell earns ACC pitching honors

Virginia senior pitcher Brandon Creswell earned ACC pitcher of the week honors for pitching a complete game in the Cavaliers' win over No. 3 Georgia Tech, 3-1, on Friday. The southpaw tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts and allowed only one unearned run over nine innings. It was his second complete game of the year.

With the win on Friday, Creswell improved his record to 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA. In seven starts this season, he has pitched a team-high 50.1 innings and struck out 43 batters. He is holding opposing batters to a .286 batting average.

ACC player of the week honors went to Florida State junior John-Ford Griffin. Griffin went 8-for-19 for a .421 batting average with three doubles and four RBIs on the week. For the season, Griffin is batting .480 with 16 doubles and 43 RBIs.

Tee time

Former Virginia golfer James Driscoll will play in the Masters as an amateur today at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. Driscoll, who graduated last year, will be teeing off with professional golfers Tom Watson and Shigeki Maruyama at 10:12 a.m.

  • According to The Associated Press, Driscoll planned to turn pro after finishing second in the U.S. Amateur Tournament held August 21-27, 2000, but he decided a chance to compete at the Masters as an amateur was too good to pass up.

    Moving on up

    Both the Virginia men's and women's lacrosse teams moved up in the latest lacrosse rankings.

    After decimating then-No. 1 Maryland, 7-2, on Saturday, the Virginia men's lacrosse team (5-3) moved up three spots to No. 4. The loss dropped the Terrapins five places to No. 6. Syracuse regained the No. 1 ranking this week after beginning the season in the top spot but falling as far as No. 6 in subsequent weeks.
