The USA Basketball Women's Collegiate Committee announced Wednesday that Virginia women's basketball coach Debbie Ryan has been named the head coach of the 2001 USA Basketball Women's World University Games Team.
University of Iowa coach Lisa Bluder and East Carolina coach Dee Stokes were selected to serve as Ryan's assistant coaches for the team that will compete Aug. 22-Sept. 1 in Beijing, China.
The World University Games are a multi-sport competition held every two years and are open to men and women between the ages of 17 and 28 who are students, or have been within the past year, at a college or university.
Ryan said that she is thrilled for the opportunity both to work with Bluder and Stokes and also to serve as a coach to the athletes selected for the team.
"This is obviously a tremendous honor and something I'm really, really excited about," Ryan said. "I was really pleased with the assistant coaches who will be working with me. We're all head coaches, and I'm sure we'll be coaching together by committee.
"I'm also looking forward to the opportunity of coaching a fine group of athletes and getting them prepared to give us a chance at the golf medal."
Parkhill makes Hall of Fame
Former Virginia basketball star Barry Parkhill will be inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame tomorrow in Portsmouth, Va.

A two-time All-American at Virginia, Parkhill was awarded ACC basketball player of the year for the 1971-72 season and was the first Cavalier to receive this honor. He was also named ACC athlete of the year for the 1971-72 athletic year. A 6-foot-4 guard, Parkhill led the ACC in scoring in 1971-72 with an average of 21.6 points.
Following his career at Virginia, Parkhill went on to play four seasons with the Virginia Squires of the American Basketball Association. He now serves as associate athletic director for development at Virginia.
