After both teams took the lead on the first day of competition, the Virginia men's outdoor track team finished third and the women's team finished fourth, at the ACC outdoor championships held at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla., this weekend.
The men claimed its highest finish since 1984, with 59 distance points and 39 weight points.
Cavalier Brian Kollar won an ACC championship in the javelin, and Cavaliers John Welch and James Murdock took second and third. Tim Bilmanis took second in the discus and Bill Johnston took third in the hammer.
The Cavaliers also took conference honors in distance events. Bob Thiele took second place in the 5K and 10K, and Matt Ruhl placed second in the steeplechase.
The women's team placed fourth with 109 points, just seven points behind Florida State. The Cavaliers were led by Dana Coons, who took first place in the 10K and second in the 5K. Inge Jorgensen won the javelin, Eliese Mitchell placed second in the hammer throw, and Naccole Guinn took third in the triple jump.
Men's, women's tennis fall in semis
The men's tennis team scored victories from Brian Vahaly and Huntley Montgomery in the ACC semifinals on Saturday, but were eventually ousted, 4-1, by Clemson.
The Cavaliers upset Georgia Tech, 4-0, on Saturday, a win that sent Virginia to the ACC semifinals for the sixth consecutive year.
The Virginia women's tennis team upset No. 17 North Carolina on Friday, 4-3, marking its first win over a top 20 opponent this season.
In its only ACC semifinal match since 1993, the sixth-seeded women team lost to Wake Forest, 4-1. Kelly Weaver was the only Cavalier to net a singles victory.
Golf takes fourth at ACCs
The Virginia men's golf team finished fourth at the ACC Championships in Orlando, Fla. yesterday.
The Cavaliers finished at 859, five under par. Georgia Tech took the team title and Clemson's John Engler won the individual contest.
Baber drafted by Kansas City Chiefs
Virginia tight end Billy Baber was drafted in the fifth round of the NFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday.
Baber went 10th in the fifth round, the 141st draft pick overall, and was the only Virgina player to be picked up in the 2001 Draft.
Basketball stars take awards
Sophomore guard Roger Mason Jr. and sophomore forward/center Travis Watson were honored as co-recipients of the Bill Gibson Cavalier of the Year Award at the Virginia men's basketball banquet on Friday.
Mason led Virginia and was sixth in the ACC in scoring with an average of 15.7 points. He also set a Virginia record for his free throw percentage in 2001, making 88.4 percent of his free throw attempts.
Watson led the Cavaliers in rebounding and was second in the ACC with an average of 9.1. He led the ACC in offensive rebounding and in double-doubles with 13.
