The No. 8 Virginia women's lacrosse team upset fourth-ranked Loyola, 8-7, in Baltimore last night.
With less than 30 seconds left in the game, junior defender Lauri Kenis broke up a Greyhound fast break by blocking a pass and preserved the Cavaliers' slim 8-7 lead.
Goalkeeper Liz McCarthy notched 15 saves - her highest total of the season - including three on the Greyhounds' first three shots. Her last-second save in the first half prevented Loyola from tying the game, 3-3, going into the locker room.
Senior midfielder Jamie Haas notched four goals and an assist, and senior midfielder Mills Hook scored three goals to lead the Cavaliers (10-6).
Virginia built an 8-4 lead with 19 minutes left in regulation and staved off a late Loyola surge. The Greyhounds scored three unanswered goals to close out the game, but the clock ran out before they could overcome the Cavaliers' lead.
Virginia won despite being outshot 27-15 and losing 11 of 17 draw controls.
The Cavaliers go for their 13th consecutive win when they host Vanderbilt on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Feeling a little un-patriotic
The Virginia baseball team could not overcome George Mason junior Brian Anderson's five runs and fell to the Patriots, 10-5, in non-conference play Wednesday in Fairfax, Va.
Virginia junior Dan Street hit a run-scoring double in the first inning and three-run home run in the fourth inning to give the Cavaliers a 5-0 lead. But in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Patriots mounted a comeback.

Anderson's game-high three hits, along with two hits apiece from junior Robbie Robertson and senior Scott Yeager, led a George Mason offensive surge that produced 10 unanswered runs to end the game.
Freshman pitcher Chris Gale (0-2) took the loss for the Cavaliers when he entered the game in the fifth inning and allowed three runs in an inning's worth of work.
Softball hands Hokies a broom
The Virginia softball team defeated Virginia Tech in both games of a doubleheader Tuesday night at Moyers Sports Complex in Salem, Va. The Cavaliers (49-13) won the first game, 4-2, in eight innings and took the second game, 3-1, to extend their win streak to 12.
In the first game, sophomore Ruby Rojas' two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning capped a spectacular complete-game effort by junior pitcher Kristen Dennis (17-5). Dennis allowed only one unearned run on five hits. She struck out nine and walked three batters in eight innings of work.
In the nightcap, Dennis entered the game in the fourth inning and struck out the side. She allowed only one hit in four innings and struck out six while walking only one batter to preserve Virginia's 3-1 lead. The Cavaliers also capitalized on the Hokies' defensive miscues and scored two unearned runs in the first inning to jump to an early lead.
Senior Meaghan Young got two hits and scored a run in the second game. Freshman Hannah Owings also registered two hits and an RBI.
