News in brief

US Airways announced Friday their plans to cease MetroJet operations at Baltimore-Washington International Airport by December. MetroJet offers single-class seats at a low price to locations on the East Coast.

The jobs of many of the 2,240 employees of US Airways at BWI are in jeopardy because of the shut down. These lay-offs will coincide with the 11,000 made nationally last week by US Airways.

At BWI, US Airways and MetroJet are second to Southwest Airlines in largest number of flights.

Cancelling all MetroJet flights will put even more strain on airlines within the Washington metro region, where Reagan National Airport remains closed. National is the only major airport in the nation still closed following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Many officials in Northern Virginia are lobbying for National to reopen. Federal government officials say the airport's operation would pose a threat to national security.

Performance artists to visit art department

Artists Joseph Biel and Richard Kraft will visit the McIntire Department of Arts to give impromptu performance art events, Oct.1-6.

Performance art incorporates the audience by using space and time.

"They are bringing something very exciting and new," said William Wylie, assistant professor and curator of the show, in a press conference.

The Los-Angeles based duo have said that they try to allow their viewers to see the world in a new way by the union of historical and philosophical ideas.

Their photographs and paintings will be on display at Fayerweather Gallery during October.
