Football uniforms undergo makeover

This year in addition to a new coach and a new stadium, football is sporting a new look. Particularly observant fans may have noticed the jazzed-up digs adorning our football player's bods at the game Saturday. However if you didn't note any changes, fret not. The alterations were subtle, but important to the new coach.

The first major modification is the addition of players' names on the back of their jerseys above the numbers, allegedly the first time players' names have appeared on Virginia football uniforms. According to the GAMEDAY program, this change is the most exciting for the majority of players as they hope it will bring them more personalized exposure.

Second, notice how the brand spanking new white socks stretch all the way up the player's calves to their pant line - a break from the ankle socks of the past.

Third, running along the length of the sides of their pants is an orange and blue stripe. Their white pants are significantly spruced up by this alteration.

And lastly, two orange stripes start thick and taper out on the tops of their blue helmets, similar to the stripes adorning the Baltimore Ravens' helmets.

Virginia football also made a brand change, switching from Reebok-wear to Nike.

Assistant Athletic Media Relations Director Michael Colley said he didn't know what the reasoning was for the logo swap.

But, according to Colley, the rationale for the uniform makeover was pretty straightforward. Virginia has a new head coach, Al Groh, and for his debut season, "Coach Groh wanted to design new uniforms for the team." -compiled by Ryann Collins
