Virginia vs. Maryland game time set for noon

The Virginia football game against Maryland in College Park, Md., on Oct. 6 is scheduled to begin at noon. The JP/ACC Sports Network will televise the game.

2001 men's lacrosse awards announced

Virginia coach Dom Starsia announced the 2001 men's lacrosse awards on Monday.

David Jenkins and Tillman Johnson, who was an honorable mention All-American, shared the Dr. Allen Voshell Award as the team's most valuable players.

Jenkins, who also received the Harry Gaver Award for leadership for the second year in a row, concluded his career as second in school history with 426 face-off wins.

Senior attackman Conor Gill and junior Chris Rotelli were named co-recipients of the offensive MVP award. Twice a first-team All-American, Gill led the ACC in scoring and assists. Rotelli attained honorable mention All-American honors with his team-high 28 goals.

Junior defenseman Mark Koontz and Johnson shared the defensive MVP Award. Koontz was a first-team All-American in 2001, and Johnson finished with the best save rate by a Cavalier stopper in 10 years.

Midfielder James Kenny won the Tom Rixey Award for spirit and inspiration.

Senior midfielder/attackman Eric Leibowitz won the Lawrie Riggs Award for commitment and citizenship.

Sophomore defenseman Kevin McGrath was awarded the Doyle Smith Award for earning the best GPA (3.63).

Attackman/midfielder Jamison Mullen was named the most improved player.

The "Class of '99 Unsung Hero Award" went to defenseman John Harvey and midfielder Evan Mancini.
