Medical Center taps Howell as new CEO

R. Edward Howell, director and Chief Exexutive Officer of the University of Iowa hospitals, has accepted the position of vice president and CEO of the University Medical Center and its clinics.

"We conducted a national search for the best CEO in the country," said Leonard Sandridge, University executive vice president and chief operating officer, "Howell holds a strong record in both expertise and experience."

The search, preparation and process of reviewing candidates took a full year.

"Howell possesses a number of years of exceptional service at the University of Iowa hospitals and clinics," Sandridge said. "He will be responsible for overseeing the operation of the University Medical Center." Howell accepted the CEO position early last week and will begin work in February 2002.

"The U.Va. Medical Center is a quality institution, which has an excellent reputation," said Howell, who has worked in Iowa for seven-and-half-years, "I think anyone would want to be part of taking the community to another level."

As part of the interviewing process, Howell made a visit to Charlottesville to meet Sandridge and other executive officials. "The people I met were impressive," Howell said.

Howell will be in charge of the overall direction, development and operation of the Medical Center.

Before becoming the director and CEO of University of Iowa hospitals, Howell served for eight years as executive director of the Medical College of Georgia Hospitals and Clinics, and 10 years on the administrative staff of the University of Minnesota Hospitals. In addition to his professional appointments, Howell has served as a faculty member at the University of Minnesota, Medical College of Georgia and the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

Howell said he believes he will bring a "depth of experience in academic medicine as well as a desire to be part of our community."

Howell received his bachelor of science from Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, and a master of science in hospital and health services administration from Ohio State University.

"It was a difficult decision," said Howell, "but my wife and I feel it was the best decision and are excited about coming to Charlottesville"
