News in brief

The Lawn isn't the only place on Grounds where history lovers can take tours. The University Health System now offers a self-guided audio historical tour. The three-minute "Health System Walk Through History Tour" celebrates the University Hospital's 100th anniversary.

A cassette tape and photo scrapbook serve as guides along the route, which runs along Hospital Drive from McKim Hall to the Old Medical Center entrance, according to the University's Web site. The book and cassette players are available for free on weekdays at the Body Talk office in the West Complex multi-story lobby and on weekends in the Health Sciences Library.

The Health System is planning other events to celebrate the hospital's 100th anniversary. At the Nov. 3 football game against Wake Forest, all people currently or formerly associated with the Health System will be asked to stand and be recognized.

The Health Sciences Library also is raising money for a time capsule to go on display in the University Hospital lobby. The capsule, to be opened in 2051, would contain predictions for what medical care will be like in 50 years.

Charlottesville vets honored by French consul general

The French consul general honored four Charlottesville-area residents on Saturday for their contributions to the liberation of France in World War II.

In a ceremony at Charlottesville City Hall, Consul General Jilles Montaigner gave the vets "Thank you, America" certificates, which the French government awards to American veterans of the 1944 campaign in France.

"It makes you feel pretty good," said A.R. Glover, one of the honored veterans.

The consul general is scheduled to travel to other locations in Virginia and North Carolina to honor veterans of the French liberation, Glover said.

The consul general also presided over a planting ceremony Saturday in Claudius Crozet Park to honor Crozet, a Frenchman who immigrated to the Charlottesville area and co-founded the Virginia Military Institute.
