Sports in Brief

Virginia women's basketball will lose one more starter from last year when the 2001-2002 season kicks off on Nov. 5 after junior forward Marcie Dickson announced that she will not play this season because of medical issues.

Dickson has lettered in both of the past two seasons since joining the Cavaliers in 1999. Last season, she saw playing time in every one of Virginia's 32 games. Over the 2000-2001 season she averaged 6.2 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.

Last year's Virginia squad finished 18-14 with an appearance in the NCAA tournament. But now that Dickson is out, the Cavaliers will return only four letter winners to this year's team. Virginia kicks off its season against the Russian National Team on Nov. 5.

Lacrosse picks 2002 captains

The Virginia men's lacrosse team chose seniors Conor Gill, Mark Koontz and Eric Leibowitz as its captains for the 2002 season.

Both Gill, an attackman, and Koontz, a defender, served as team captains last year. Gill has won All-American accolades two seasons in a row and is on track to be Virginia's first three-time first-team All-American. He averaged 3.77 points per game and 2.62 assists last season, to lead the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Koontz also was a first-team All-American selection last season and led the ACC with 67 ground ball pickups.

Leibowitz is a strong reserve player at attack and midfield who scored two goals last season and earned his third letter. This season he may see more playing time because Virginia's midfield is relatively young.

Virginia coach Dom Starsia was pleased the team's choice of captains. The Cavaliers will kick off their regular season on Feb. 24th against Towson.
